Jobs in Texas

Economists predict that Jobs in Texas will be created at the rate of 2 million additional positions by the year 2016. This growth is in large part thanks to medium- and small businesses but also thanks to fact that Texas is home to no less than 64 Fortune 500 companies, which is more than any other state (as of October 2009).

Although Texas is not immune to unemployment caused by the recession, thanks to its core industries which included energy, technology, and mining as well as its large amounts of natural resources, Texas was one of the least-hit states by the last recession.

On this hub page Texas Jobs, Texas Employers, and the Texans' way of Living!

Jobs in Texas

The rate at which jobs are being filled in Texas as a whole has considerably slowed down this year. Normally, Texas has over 350,000 jobs filled per year, but this year has slowed down in hiring rates and the unemployment rates have skyrocketed. Even through ugly statics on unemployment, there are still pockets of growth that can be seen through Texas.

Texas is known to have the second-highest amount of income in the U.S; over 1 trillion dollars. Texas is only beat by California through its production. Even though Texas has been hit and affected by the recession, they are not in as bad of a shape as some of the other states in the country.

Texas Fortune 500 Companies

No other state beats Texas when it comes to the number of corporate headquarters of Fortune 500 Companies. Texas is home to a whopping 64 Fortune 500 Companies (as of October 2009) which has kept many people employed in Texas! These companies provide many jobs to current Texans and will provide many jobs in the future.

Exxon Mobil
Fortune 500 - 2009 Rank: 1
CEO: Rex W. Tillerson
Address:
5959 Las Colinas Blvd.
Irving, TX 75039
Phone: (972) 444 1000
Website: http://www.exxonmobil.com
Displaced as Corporate Enemy No. 1 - thank you, Wall Street bankers! - Exxon Mobil regains the Fortune 500's No. 1 slot this year, despite the sharp fall in oil prices. Indeed, if the fourth quarter of 2008 demonstrates anything, it's that Exxon Mobil is perfectly capable of making billions of dollars even with oil at $50 a barrel or less.

ConocoPhillips
Fortune 500 - 2009 Rank: 4
CEO: James J. Mulva
Address:
600 N. Dairy Ashford Rd.
Houston, TX 77079
Phone: (281) 293 1000
Website: http://www.conocophillips.com
Timing is everything. ConocoPhillips reported a $17 billion loss last year -- most of it related to an ill-timed acquisition. (It bought natural gas producer Burlington Resources for $34 billion in 2005, back when gas prices were triple what they are today.)

AT&T
Fortune 500 - 2009 Rank: 8
CEO:
Randall L. Stephenson
Address:
208 S. Akard St.
Dallas, TX 75202
Phone: (210) 821 4105
Website: http://www.att.com
You'd think that as the exclusive wireless carrier for Apple's iPhone, AT&T would be making big money on the hyper-popular device. You'd be wrong. AT&T is kicking back a huge share of its iPhone sales to Apple -- a subsidy that cost the carrier $450 million in the fourth quarter of 2008 alone. AT&T is betting that the payoff will come when all those iPhone customers start racking up heavy Internet usage charges year after year after year.

Valero Energy
Fortune 500 - 2009 Rank: 10
CEO: William R. Klesse
Address:
1 Valero Way
San Antonio, TX 78249
Phone: (210) 345 2000
Website: http://www.valero.com

Marathon Oil
Fortune 500 - 2009 Rank: 23
CEO: Clarence P. Cazalot Jr.
Address:
5555 San Felipe Rd.
Houston, TX 77056
Phone: (713) 629 6600

350000 odd new jobs a year is definitely a sign of a healthy economy and confidence in the State. Houston and Dallas will probably take the lions share, but I have seen other smaller cities all doing well.

This is a very interesting point of view, I was more or less under the impression that the job-loss in the oil sector was devastating. This sounds much better...

I live in Colorado and have considered moving to Texas, in particular the Dallas area. Our cost for housing has gone through the roof and I have heard I can get much more for the same money there.

While the large number of jobs might draw job-seekers to Texas, that snake may keep a lot of them away. It's no surprise that the population of Texas is growing so fast. There are jobs to be had, especially in the D/FW area. It looks like Dallas/Fort Worth jobs account for more than half of the total.

Great Hub. A few years ago I almost had to relocate to Fort Worth for a rather large aircraft company. I have always been curious as to how things would have panned out. But nobody told me about the big snakes (that would have changed my mind).

My cousin, who lives in Houston, always tells me about the opportunities in Texas. After reading this I know for sure he is not bragging.

It's good to know that there are loads of promising job opportunities in Texas, particularly around Dallas. I'm getting ready to relocate to Mesquite this year to be closer to my elderly mother, and this information is indeed very useful.

With todays economy in shambles and the loss of millions of jobs across the nation, Texas looks like the place to be. With the job market in Dallas alone offering over 40k jobs, you really should check into this.

karenjns897 2 years ago

I hadn't appreciated how critical the Texan economomy was to the overall US finances.

Clearly small businesses from Texas will be a major part of the solution to the nation's fiscal dilemma

As long as the economy is better, I'm sure that Texas will have many good jobs available. But quite frankly, 350,000 jobs filled per year is quite low, considering that there are at least 100,000 graduates each year.

Now I'm thinking might as well get us moving to Texas. :) That's some very interesting, well-researched statistical information up there not to mention it puts all eyes on Texas, especially with the rampant company downsizing in the country. The information on AT&T is definitely a huge magnet for communication engineers and IT professionals alike.

Jobs like Gaming Supervisors, Personal Care, Home Health Aides, Computer Software Apps Engineers, Mainstream Kindergarten Teachers, Special Education Teachers, Preschool, Kindergarten, and Elementary School just to name a few are The Fastest Growing Jobs in the State of Texas. Wow! 350,000 new jobs in a year. That's really impressive. It's also good to see that the Fortune 500 Companies are spread around different cities like Houston, Dallas & Irving etc. That can only help with Quality of Life Issues, because you don't get everyone trying to cram into the same small area every morning & escape evry evening as you do in some more concentrated world business centres.

Texas! You have the major oil companies but what about the nuclear industry... you guys are getting 2 reactors in your state! That is amazing... The energy industry is definitely prime market for jobs.... now you just have to marry it with education.

Texas is one of the very few states in the union where jobs are booming. I have a friend that works in the Dallas - Ft. Worth Area for an oil company. He is single, young and drives a Porsche. If that isn't a testimony for the Lone Star State, I don't know what is. His only complaint is the fire ants!

Peace,

Charlie~

Do you enjoy temperatures of 110 degrees for 2-3 months out of the year? LOL! I gotta tell you, I'm a native Texan, and I do NOT recommend moving to Texas. If you are almost anywhere else, you are better off!

Nice HUB, but honestly, if I could get out of here, I would!

If my kids weren't rooted in California, I would much rather move my business to Texas. Even though the weather is much better in California, the political environment is much better in Texas, especially for businesses. That is why there is such a positive outlook on jobs in this state. The more business friendly the state is the more businesses it will attract, thus providing many more jobs for the citizens of that state. Well done Texas.
